A Community Program Inspired by a Story of Resilience and Love

Project Nya is an initiative by Zion's Mission Animal Rescue aimed at providing emergency medical relief to pets belonging to low-income or fixed-income families. This program honors Nya, one of our original dogs who played a crucial role in the creation of Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue. Nya received life-saving chemotherapy under our care for four years and continued to live a normal life with the rest of our sanctuary crew until her passing in March 2024. Inspired by Nya’s persistence and resilience, we have created this project to give other dogs the same opportunity for life-saving care. Project Nya seeks to reduce the number of animals being surrendered to shelters and keep families together by easing the financial burden of pet owners facing medical emergencies. Priority will be given to cases where the pet's life is at immediate risk, where urgent care can prevent long-term health issues, or where long-term illness requires ongoing medical support.

Testimony from a community member who's cat received help through Project Nya

I can’t say enough nice things about Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue and Project Nya. Not long ago, my cat Percy was disagnosed with colon cancer. My insticts told me that Percy was not doing well when I mentioned it to a team member of Zion’s. They quickly stepped into action and was able to get me an appointment with their vet the following day. The wonderful vet provided me with Percy’s sad diagnosis along with medication that provide a humane extension of his life. At the time of this writing, Percy is doing well and enjoying his extra time with me and his pet siblings. Zion’s Mission is more than an ordinary animal rescue. They don’t just provide financial support, but also emotional support to pet owners during very difficult times. To me, this puts them in a special category, entitling them to as much community support we can must. It’s not common to have a group that cares not only for vulnerable animals, but humans as well.

Project Nya has also helped…

Honey

Honey's story is a heartbreaking reminder of why Project Nya exists. Her owner reached out to us frantically and in tears, in desperation after Honey suffered an accidental devastating fall from a 4th-story apartment in Rockaway. Without the resources to cover emergency care, her family was overwhelmed with fear and worry.

We immediately stepped in, rushing Honey to the vet for critical treatment. Tragically, despite all efforts, her injuries were too severe, and the most compassionate choice was to let her rest peacefully.

Project Nya was able to ensure that Honey’s owner didn’t have to bear the additional burden of financial stress during this difficult time. We also provided private cremation, giving her family the closure and peace of mind they deserved.

Stella

Sweet Stella was almost surrendered to NYACC due to health issues her mother couldn’t afford, and the ASPCA kept canceling vet appointments for. After seeing the plea that went out to New Hope Partners, we immediately contacted Stella’s owner and promised to help her.

Stella was suffering was severe ear infections and a skin infection that left her miserable. Through Project Nya, Stella visits our vet once a month to tackle the infections and also compact her ears, which were in terrible condition due to the severe infections.

With consistent vet care, Stella’s personality was transformed back to the happy pittie she was prior to her illness and continues to live happily at home with her mom.

Cocoa

Cocoa’s pet mom reached out to us for help when she noticed her sweet pup wasn’t acting normal. It turned out Cocoa was was battling pyometra, a severe and life-threatening infection causing her uterus to fill with pus and dangerous bacteria. Without immediate surgery, Cocoa was going to die.

Thanks to Project Nya, Cocoa was able to get the emergency care she desperately needed, along with getting spayed, and lives happily and healthy at home.

Jamie

Jamie’s owner contacted us at the 11th hour after a mass that was forming on Jamie’s head ruptured, causing immense pain for the pup. We rushed Jamie to our vet, where they were able to address the wound, and do a culture test for cancer.

Thankfully, the tumor results came back non-cancerous! Jamie was able to leave the vet clinic with a clean bill of health and recover happily at home.

Diamond

Diamond’s was battling pyometra, a severe and life-threatening infection causing her uterus to fill with pus and dangerous bacteria. Without urgent surgery, her life was at serious risk.

Thanks to Project Nya, Diamond was able to get the emergency care she desperately needed, along with getting spayed.

Grace

Grace’s owner and her friend contacted us for emergency help after a large dog attacked little Grace during her evening walk. The dog came running out of a nearby house with no collar or leash and bit little Grace not letting go. The owner of the dog came out yelling “my dog is trained to kill so don’t come near my house.”

Grace was rushed to our vets where she immediately went in for surgery for drainage and also to be spayed. This sweet girl was able to go back home with her loving mother post surgery, thanks to Project Nya.

…and so many more.
