Residents Demand Stiffer Penalties For Animal Cruelty

7 March 2025

Exchanges grew heated at the 100th Precinct’s Community Council meeting last week as animal rescuers and other residents demanded more be done after the head of the NYPD’s Animal Cruelty Division insisted no signs of abuse were found on the two dead dogs that were left at the foot of Beach 84th Street earlier this month.

“It’s infuriating and insulting,” said Sloane Quealy-Miner, who was on the scene with fellow animal rescuer Kim Fraser, when the two dogs, who appeared to suffer severe head trauma and other injuries, were discovered. Quealy-Miner and Fraser handled the dogs, bagged their remains, and carried them to the NYPD vehicle for transfer.

CB14 Calls For A Crack Down On Animal Abuse

14 February 2025

Community Board 14 passed a motion at its monthly meeting this week asking local officials to crack down on acts of animal cruelty and abuse.

Members unanimously agreed to submit a letter to the 100th and 101st Precincts, the NYPD Animal Cruelty Division, the Queens District Attorney’s Office, Queens South Command, and elected officials with regard to increasing the training of officers in the prevention, detection, and identification of individuals involved in criminal acts of animal cruelty.

The vote came at the request of local animal rescuers, Sloane Quealy-Miner and Kim Fraser, who were on the scene when two dead dogs were found a little more than a week ago at the bottom of the boardwalk ramp on Beach 84th Street. Both animals suffered from severe head trauma and other injuries consistent with abuse.

Rescuers Demand Answers After Two Dogs Found Dead on the Beach

6 February 2025

In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 2, dog walkers came across a horrific sight. Two dogs were left dead right at the entrance of the beach on Beach 84th Street. Local animal rescuers speculate that it’s part of a much larger and longtime issue involving dog fighting rings, and they’re holding the NYPD’s Animal Cruelty division’s feet to the fire to hopefully put an end to it.

The dogs found next to each other on Sunday were a black and white female pitbull mix that appeared to be pregnant or had recently given birth, and a tan female pitbull mix puppy. The ASCPA is currently conducting necropsies to determine how they died. However, the black and white dog was full of old and new scars, bruising, bleeding around its anal gland and nose, and an indented head, leading rescuers to believe she may have been struck over the head. The puppy allegedly showed similar signs of being hit in the head. Also at the scene were crumpled up newspaper pages and an empty bottle of sanitizer, leading rescuers to believe the culprits behind the killings tried to cover their tracks.

Chicken carcasses, dead mice inside coconuts, goat heads, live pigs with ears and tails cut off, even a dead dog with a broken neck. These are just a few of the horrific things being found on the beaches near the Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge to Howard Beach, with similar reports in Sunset Cove in Broad Channel. Religious animal sacrifices and offerings around Jamaica Bay have been an issue for decades around these areas, but as Councilwoman Joann Ariola said at a recent rally after a heavy increase in such activities over the summer, “It’s never been worse than it is right now, and it has to stop.”

Runaway Dog Living in Green-Wood Cemetery Rescued After Months on Its Own

15 DECEMBER 2023

A runaway dog has been living in Green-Wood Cemetery for the past seven months. And last month, following a 17-day stake-out, which included three sleepovers in the historic graveyard, a heroic team of animal rescuers successfully captured it.

The young dog, thought to be around one year old, first went missing from a Windsor Terrace rescue in March 2023. After circling the area, the dog took refuge at the cemetery.

So, Sloane Quealy-Miner, president of Rockaway-based Zion's Mission Animal Rescue, teamed up with Kim Fraser of Sasha's Mission Animal Rescue to locate and trap the dog.

Drink and Draw for the Dogs

04 AUGUST 2023

It’s time to enjoy an evening of beer, barks and art! On Sunday, August 13, local animal rescues Zion’s Mission and Sasha’s Mission are teaming up to host Drink and Draw for the Dogs, a fun night out for a good cause.

With Animal Care Center of New York at full capacity of potential pets looking for a home, the work of local rescues like Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue and Sasha’s Mission Animal Rescue is more important than ever. The two nonprofit organizations have been operating for several years to help animals, especially dogs, who may have been abandoned, abused or neglected, rehabilitating them or providing care, and finding them loving homes. And often, they team up to work together.

Just last month, they came to the rescue of Molly, a senior dog that was saved from some harsh conditions at a home in Broad Channel and was taken to an ACC facility. Zion’s and Sasha’s Missions quickly adopted her from ACC

Zion’s & Sasha’s Mission Launch Pet Food Drive

09 NOVEMBER 2023

The season of giving is upon us and it’s not just people in need, but pets too. Zion’s Mission, Sasha’s Mission and Bungalow Bar are teaming up in honor of Pawsgiving, by holding a pet food drive this month.

From now through Monday, November 20, during opening hours, people are welcome to drop off unused, sealed wet and dry dog and cat food at Bungalow Bar (377 Beach 92nd Street). This pet food drive is made possible by local pet rescues, Zion’s Mission and Sasha’s Mission, and Bungalow Bar agreed to serve as the drop off spot where a donation bin has been set up. All pet food collected will be given to families in need that have reached out to Zion’s Mission and Sasha’s Mission for some help in keeping their furry friends fed over the holidays.

“We’re holding this pet food drive to help families in the Rockaway area who may need some help getting pet good during the Thanksgiving holiday, so they don’t have to worry about it. We know the holidays are a financially stressful time for a lot of families, we would like to give back to our community when we can, and now through Thanksgiving would be the most opportune time to do so. Pets need to eat, too,” Zion’s volunteer Maribel Cosme-Vitagliani said. “We really want to support our local community the way they have supported us throughout the years.”

Wavemaker, Sloane Quealy-Miner and Kim Fraser: Animal Rescuers

18 AUGUST 2023

Last month, two police officers from the 100th Precinct removed a sick dog and five neglected cats from a flea-infested home in Broad Channel. The pets were left behind after the owner was taken from the property six days before. When the news got out, it took little time for rescuers Sloane Quealy-Miner and Kim Fraser to step up and do what they do best

“I saw a lost-and-found post that the dog was taken to the Animal Care Center,” said Fraser. “Sloane and I really wanted to get her but I’m already fostering six dogs at my house and Sloane is fostering eight at hers,” she noted.

Nevertheless, Fraser assured Miner that she would make room for one more. “I don’t think I even finished my sentence when I saw Sloane texting ACC,” she quipped.
