We have finally stopped jumping up and down long enough to announce Princess Penny has been officially adopted by her foster hero, turned forever hero mom, Francis! This union was truly meant to be and Princess is treasured beyond measure by her mom. In fact, Francis has told me time and again that Princess is her biggest joy and the light of her life. It's moments like this that renew our faith in humanity and make all the struggles we face in rescue worth it.
We first met Princess outside of BACC when she was being surrendered in August. We were there picking up a litter of neonatal kittens. With COVID guidelines in full effect we were outside the fence waiting when she walked up. Having a soft spot for seniors we immediately walked over. The woman surrendering Princess told us how her mom, Princess's owner for the past 13 years, passed away and that she couldn't keep her.
Before I knew it our kittens were being handed to us and I watched over my shoulder as Princess was led to the outside intake area. I could hear the woman tell the shelter worker that she had brought Princess’s favorite water dish and my heart broke for her. No sooner had we gotten in the car with the kittens Matt turned to me and said "She is cute, I feel so bad for her." To which I said, "We will check on her. I wonder if anyone will come".
Over the next few days we were in regular contact with the shelter. And every conversation went the same as the day before. They asked if we could take her and we asked if there was anyone else expressing any interest to which they repeatedly said no. We even went to meet Princess again hoping if we took the perfect pictures or videos we could find a foster. But every potential foster we found fell through because Princess isn't dog friendly.
One morning Matt found me crying and he knew why without me saying anything. He knew I wanted more than anything for us to help Princess and he knew she really needed us. Before I could wipe the tears from my cheeks I heard him say "Let's pull her. We will go to home depot now and we will make one of our rooms into two". And so for the next few days we worked non stop to prepare a special room just for Princess.
There is a saying “the rescue doesn’t end with the pull”. And that couldn’t be more true. Princess was a mess when we got her and she had extremely bad separation anxiety. Not to mention she was in heat and bleeding. So much so that when we took her to our vet they performed immediate surgery to remove her uterus and 13 huge bladder stones from her bladder. Her costly lifesaving surgeries and later her training were made possible by incredibly generous angel donors who are really the unsung heroes time and again. We are so incredibly thankful to everyone who supports us.
And a very special thank you to our trusted NJ trainer and friend Laura Miller who initially welcomed Princess into her home for a board and train to work on her separation anxiety. And to Vibeke, our Brooklyn trainer who runs Sit Stay for continuing Princess's training regarding her separation anxiety and all her on boarding.
